Orange Is the New Black is a Netflix original series that is one of the most diverse shows out right now. A women's prison is the main setting for the show. However, there are flash backs in every episode that show the lives of the women before they were locked up. This aspect of the show serves to humanize the prisoners. OITNB portrays women and womanhood much differently than most other shows. Orange Is the New Black shows variations in gender expression, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and age. Not only does this show deal with sexism, but also racism, ageism, ableism, homophobia, xenophobia, colorism, the problems prison system in the US, and discrimination people with English as a second language face.


How to Get Away with Murder
How to Get Away with Murder is a show about a defense lawyer, Annalise Keating. Annalise Keating is an incredible character in television right now. She is a smart and accomplished black woman. She is widowed, child-less, and a successful lawyer and professor. She is clever and assertive. However, she has many faults to prove she is a multi-dimensional character. The rest of the cast is fairly diverse as well, and includes character of different economic backgrounds, romantic relationships, and race.
Parks and Recreation
Created by Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation is a funny, light-hearted TV show that still includes feminist messages. Leslie Knope, played by Poehler, works in local government. She is passionate and eager to make her town a better place. There are even pictures all around her office of famous, female politicians, including Nancy Pelosi and Madeleine Albright. Leslie Knope is always optimistic and doesn't let anything or anyone stand in her way.
